Monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso
A place between sky, water and rock
The Monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso is a jewel of spiritual tranquillity and architectural beauty: like an eagle’s nest, it towers over the steep eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, seemingly carved into the rock, offering breathtaking views of the water and mountains. A visit here is much more than just an excursion: it is an experience for the mind, the camera and the soul.
The origins of the monastery date back to the 12th century, when the wealthy merchant Alberto Besozzi, after a shipwreck, made a vow of consecration to God. He began living as a hermit in a small cave and later founded the current monastery. The complex consists of three parts – the church, the convent and the southern convent – which have been skilfully expanded over the centuries. Particularly striking are the frescoes dating back to the 14th-17th centuries and the crypt containing Besozzi’s sarcophagus.
How to get to the monastery
By car:
Those arriving by car can park above the monastery, at Cascine del Quicchio in Leggiuno. From there, a staircase with 268 steps leads to the monastery. For visitors with limited mobility, there is a lift carved into the rock (at a height of 51 metres) that takes you directly to the complex.
Boat:
A particularly picturesque way to reach the monastery is by boat. Several Lake Maggiore boat lines dock directly at the monastery pier, including those from Stresa, Intra and Laveno. The crossing is not only convenient but also extremely scenic.
Public transport:
The nearest railway stations are Sangiano or Laveno. From there, you can reach the monastery by bus or taxi.
